Our Overall #1 Rated Pick

Updated On September 22, 2023

Our overall top pick paint sprayer for fences is the Wagner Spraytech FLEXiO 590 Handheld HVLP Sprayer.

This sprayer is one of the best ones regardless of your skill level with paint sprayers, it makes it easy to get a smooth finish with an even paint flow.

While it is a bit on the pricier side, it's still much cheaper than most airless paint sprayers and offers a similar level of quality.

Plus, they also have the FLEXiO 5000, and the FLEXiO 570 in this line as well so you can choose the model that will work best for your needs going forward.

What Are the Different Types of Paint Sprayers?

There are several different kinds of paint sprayers out there, and only some of them work well as a fence paint sprayer.

This is because, when spray painting a fence, you're going to be outside, you might need different spray patterns, and the pressure level you need to do a good job is different than it might be in other circumstances.

So, let's go over some of the best types of paint sprayers out there and how they're different so you can understand which paint sprayer is best for painting a fence.

Gravity Feed Spray Guns

Gravity feed spray guns work because they allow gravity to do all the heavy lifting, literally.

These pneumatic spray guns allow the paint to flow down through the gun where it meets up with a powerful stream of pressurized air, usually from an air compressor.

This air then propels the paint or mixture out of the nozzle in a precise spray pattern so you can get your job done easier, faster, and with the ultimate precision.

This process is often referred to as “atomization,” which just means that it’s turning the paint or fluid into a stream of tiny particles, propelled by air.

That’s why it’s important to know your settings. The heavier the fluid, the higher the air pressure needs to be to create the right spray.

This is why HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) spray guns are often used to maximize efficiency rather than their siphon-feed counterparts.

LVLP & HVLP Spray Guns

An LVLP spray gun is on that is designed to use a low volume or air and paint at low pressure, making it safer, but also producing a weaker spray that is harder to control.

These spray guns are cheaper and don't require such a heavy-duty air compressor to be used properly.

However, they do not typically apply a high-quality finish when compared with the other options available.

An HVLP spray gun is an industry-standard product, meaning High Volume, Low Pressure.

These spray guns use a powerful spray of compressed air to create a spray pattern of a paint and air mixture that paints the wall with a smooth finish which is why they're often used for automotive spray painting.

These are suitable for interior use and they will work outside as well, but they are louder because of the more powerful air compressors, and they also are a bit more dangerous.

Additionally, because of the air and paint mixture, there is a possibility of getting overspray on your paint job, leading to a bit more clean-up required for your DIY project.

Airless Paint Sprayers

Next, there are airless paint sprayers.

These are some of the highest-grade professional paint guns out there and they can be used to tackle a variety of projects.

They create an incredibly precise spray pattern that makes it easy to create a beautifully crisp finish on whatever your paint project might be.

However, they don't use compressed air to atomize the paint and mix it with air (hence, airless) but rather a motor to compress the paint itself. This creates less of a risk of bubbles, debris, and anything else destroying the smoothness of your paint finish.

Pump Sprayers

Another option you have when painting a fence are pump sprayers.

I wouldn't recommend these types of sprayers for painting, though. They're better used as a fence stain sprayer, and we have an article on the best pump sprayers for staining fences below.

These sprayers work by pumping the coating (whether it be a stain, sealer, or something else) through the hose from a bucket.

They're not ideal for creating a clean, precise finish with something like paint, though.

This is because they're more often used with something that isn't as thick as paint, and many of these sprayers are used for spraying things like pesticides on your lawn.

How Do Paint Sprayers for Fences Work?

These fence paint sprayers work by loading up paint or stain into the hopper or bucket so that it can be pulled into the gun.

Using either air pressure or electric power, the sprayer makes an aerosol of the stain for your staining projects and projects it out the tip of the gun, spraying it on the fence.

More importantly, however, these spray guns use a dynamic spray tip and typically have adjustable pressure so that you can change the spray pattern - often with 3 different spray pattern options - and ensure you have perfect coverage over the entire surface while you're working.

This flow control allows you to achieve the perfect control spray so you can work as efficiently as possible, covering the whole area without excess overspray.

This saves time and stain so you can make the best use of your materials.

Did you know: Paint sprayers can cut down on your painting time significantly. After prep work, it can take as little as 10 minutes to paint a room with a paint sprayer!

What Are The Best Paint Sprayers for Fences?

So, now that you have a higher-level overview of the types of paint sprayers on the market, which are the best ones to use for painting a fence?

To be fair, you could probably use any of the types of paint sprayers above and still get the job done.

However, there are types of paint sprayers that are better suited for painting a fence.

The 2 best types, in my opinion, are airless paint sprayers and HVLP paint sprayers, which is most of what you're going to see on our list below.

This is because these types of paint sprayers create a more precise stream of paint that is easier to control and easier to lay down.

When you're painting a fence, it's often a rougher type of material (unfinished wood) and that means it's going to absorb paint like crazy.

This means that in order to finish the job well and finish it in a timely manner, you need a sprayer that is powerful, precise, and able to deal with a lot of paint at once.

Otherwise, you're going to deal with the nuisance of refilling a paint cup every five seconds, which almost negates the reason most people use a paint sprayer in the first place.

In my opinion, airless paint sprayers are the best professional-grade sprayers out there for all sorts of painting projects.

That said, they are by far the most expensive paint sprayers out there and they do take a little time to learn how to use properly due to the high pressure they operate at.

This is why I often recommend HVLP spray guns or handheld paint sprayers because they're easier to maneuver and that makes it easier to manage the paint flow to create a smooth finish if you're just getting started with paint sprayers.

What Should You Look For in a Fence Paint Sprayer?

When you're buying a fence paint sprayer, you'll want to look out for a few very important factors because they can make your life much easier.

First, you'll need to know what volume you plan to work with, because it would be inefficient to buy a low volume sprayer if you're planning on working on a large wooden fence.

The second thing to consider is whether you want an electric spray gun or a pneumatic spray gun. The electric spray gun will be more lightweight, which is great when you're carrying it for long periods of time.

However, pneumatic spray guns are typically a bit more high-quality and do not need to be recharged during use.

Look for the durability of the product as well, because these devices take a lot of damage during use.

Finally, look for a fence paint sprayer with easy cleanup, because it is important to always clean the sprayer after each use.

The best ones allow you to hook up a basic garden hose to clean out the paint cup which makes life much easier when you're done with your painting project.

Our Paint Sprayer Reviews of The Top 7 Fence Paint Sprayers

Our top pick is the Wagner Spraytech FLEXiO 590 because it's got amazing adjustability.

Not only is does it have 10 different speed settings that allow you to adjust the paint flow and customize it to your project, but it's a sleek handheld model that makes it easy to use in a variety of situations.

Chances are you aren't just looking to buy a paint sprayer to paint your fence, you'll want it to tackle other projects in the future.

In which case, the FLEXiO 590 is a great choice for you.

This FLEXiO 590 can tackle most projects because of its X-Boost turbine which allows you to spray unthinned materials like interior paints, exterior paints, and stains as well.

So, if you're looking for a fantastic, all-around handheld paint sprayer to paint your fence, the 590 is probably a great option to add to your toolkit!

Pros

  • Works on a variety of surfaces
  • X-Boost turbine for extra spray power
  • 10 speed settings for flow adjustment

Cons

  • On the pricey side for an HVLP spray gun
  • Not cordless
  • Some clogging issues with oil-based finishes

Our second choice is also a Wagner Spraytech HVLP sprayer, but this time is a more budget-friendly option.

You can check prices for this model on Amazon to determine the current price, but it's usually anywhere between $50 and $100 which makes it a fantastic, affordable HVLP option if you're just getting started or don't want to break the bank when buying a paint sprayer.

This is a smaller version of their FLEXiO series and it's much more focused on spraying stain, lacquer, varnish, and other finishes of that nature so if you're only looking for a paint sprayer this might not be the best option.

With that said, it does offer 3 different spray patterns that make it easier to maintain flow control and it's also incredibly lightweight which makes it easy to maneuver.

Just keep in mind if you're using paint with this spray gun, it will need to be thinned out and you need to read the manual closely to make sure you're using the gun properly.

Pros

  • 3 different spray patterns
  • Material flow adjustment trigger
  • Super efficient and easy to maneuver

Cons

  • Intended to spray thin-bodied coatings rather than paint
  • Small paint cup (ideal for small to medium-sized projects)

Our high-end choice is the epic Graco Magnum X5 airless paint sprayer.

This sprayer is one of the best airless paint sprayers on the market, and while it's definitely expensive, it's a great addition to any homeowner's arsenal because of the sheer versatility it offers.

This will not only be a fantastic fence paint sprayer, but it can tackle almost any painting project you throw at it in the future.

Not only that, but it's easy to clean (it hooks up to your garden hose like I mentioned above) it's ergonomic, and it has minimal clogs during use due to its reversible spray tip.

You can spray materials of almost any viscosity without thinning them out and it offers an incredibly fine finish on almost any painting project you can think of.

One of the best parts of the Graco Magnum series is the fact that you can control the paint flow so easily, even as a beginner. That's because of the stainless steel piston pump that creates a high-pressure paint flow even on unthinned paints.

Sure, it'll take a few tries and I recommend starting out on some scrap wood to get the hang of it, but overall it's a fairly easy airless paint sprayer to start off with.

If you're looking for an incredible paint sprayer to add to your toolkit for the long haul, investing in the Graco Magnum X5 is a great option for you!

Pros

  • Sprays paint, primer, and stains
  • Comes with a 75 ft. hose
  • High-pressure pump

Cons

  • On the pricey side
  • Only comes with a one-year warranty

If you're still not sure about going with an airless paint sprayer, the REXBETI High Power Paint Sprayer is a great HVLP option for you.

This one often comes in around $60 and comes with 6 different nozzles sizes which is a great bargain since most HVLP guns only come with about 4 spray tips included.

Plus, this spray gun offers three spray patterns, adjustable paint flow control, and it's easy to use and wash at the end of your painting project.

It's a pretty handy size for medium projects and it comes equipped with all the cleaning and painting tools you'll need to get the job done right.

If you're looking for a great starter paint gun that fits within your budget, the REXBETI High Power Paint Sprayer is a great spray gun for you!

Pros

  • Comes with 6 nozzles
  • 3 different spray patterns
  • Easy to use and clean

Cons

  • Not a big name brand
  • Not great for larger projects
  • A bit heavier than other HVLP spray guns (4 lbs.)

Our next choice is the HomeRight Finish Max paint sprayer, which is a fantastic option for all sorts of painting projects.

This one also comes in at an affordable price of around $80 which makes it a great option for those who want a high-quality spray gun at an affordable price.

Using brass spray tip technology, the Finish Max has incredible precision compared to spray guns that use a plastic spray tip to create their spray pattern.

Plus, the Finish Max comes with a 2-year warranty as well as notoriously amazing customer service, so if you're new to paint spray guns this is a great gun to start off with.

While it's not as good at tackling large projects as their HomeRight c800971, it's a fantastic option for standard painting projects and homeowners who love to DIY.

It has a good-sized paint can for pretty much any paint job and it can spray a wide variety of materials, including chalk paint, varnish, primers, and clear sealers.

If you're looking for versatility, the Finish Max is a great choice for you!

Pros

  • High-quality brass needle
  • Super easy to clean
  • Sprays a wide variety of materials

Cons

  • Not a big enough paint can for large projects
  • Only offers 400 watts of power compared to the REXBETI 700 watt spray gun

Our next spray gun is another Wagner, but this one is the perfect hybrid between an airless paint sprayer and an HVLP paint sprayer.

The Control Spray Max is a powerful and versatile spray gun that has a stationary base that sits on the floor and a 20-foot hose that makes it easier to spray a large volume of paint without tiring out your arm from extended use.

The Control Spray Max is a fantastic workhorse of a paint sprayer that can be used to paint all sorts of materials.

While you will need to thin out latex paints to spray them effectively with the Control Spray Max, this spray gun really excels at flow control and creating a smooth finish.

This spray gun is a few steps up from the Control Spray model and if you're looking for something to use on many DIY projects in the future, not just painting your fence, this would be a great choice for you!

Pros

  • Amazing nozzle that is durable
  • Has a two-stage turbine for maximum propulsion
  • Easy to adjust flow and settings

Cons

  • A bit on the pricey side for an HVLP spray gun
  • Need to thin paint to spray effectively

Our last (but certainly not least) paint sprayer is the Titan Tool Airless Paint Sprayer.

This paint sprayer comes in 4 different models which means you can choose the right one for your particular needs, plus it has 2 options with a cart and 2 without.

Plus, because it's equipped with HEA technology, it has 55% less overspray than other traditional airless sprayers which means it's easier to control the flow and make sure you're getting the best finish possible on your painting project.

It also has the ability to spray unthinned coatings and has a replaceable fluid section which means you can keep the Titan ControlMax in your arsenal for as long as possible.

If you're looking for a powerful but easy-to-learn airless paint sprayer to add to your toolkit, the Titan High-Efficiency Airless sprayer is a great choice for your needs.

Pros

  • Powered by HEA technology
  • 4 different models for various price points
  • 2-year warranty included

Cons

  • Only comes with a 30-foot hose
  • Some users had problems with clogging

Of all the fence paint sprayers on this list, the Wagner FLEXiO 590 is, in my opinion, the best choice for its versatility, affordability, and the features it includes.

Wagner is a well-known, trusted brand in the paint sprayer industry and the FLEXiO series is by far their most popular, and for good reason.

If you're looking for a well-rounded spray gun that will not only do a great job spraying your fence but also on future home improvement projects, the 590 is the paint sprayer for you!
