What Affects The Cost Of Benjamin Moore Paint?

While Benjamin Moore is known to be one of the most premium paint brands out there, they still do have some less expensive paint options that you can choose from if you're set on shopping at Benjamin Moore.

Choosing a high-quality paint is a great option when you're looking to create a stellar paint job.

Benjamin Moore is one of the best paints out there and it's very comparable to Sherwin Williams or Behr.

These 3 brands are renowned as some of the best paint brands out there, but Benjamin Moore is a stellar paint company if you want a high-quality finish.

However, to answer the question of "how much a gallon of Benjamin Moore paint costs" we'll need to dive into some specific factors that affect the cost of a gallon of paint.

This is because the cost of each gallon varies based on these factors, so I can't give you a "one size fits all" answer without breaking it down by these categories.

Key Factors That Affect Paint Prices

Before we dive into specific prices, let's talk about some of the key factors that affect the overall price of your paint.

Paint Finish

One of the main factors that affect the price of paint is the paint finish.

Paints come in all sorts of finishes that determine the final luster of the paint job.

For example, Benjamin Moore offers the following finishes:

  • Matte finish
  • Flat Finish
  • Semi-gloss finish
  • High-gloss finish
  • Eggshell finish

Each one has it's own pricing structure so depending on what paint store you go to, the paint color you're going for, and other factors you're looking for that affect the price of paint.

Other Paint Qualities

Another factor that can impact the overall price of the paint is the additional qualities you're looking for in your paint.

For example, if you need a mildew resistant paint for a high-moisture area that might cost more than a typical gallon of paint.

You can also look specifically for a low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) or zero-VOC paint to minimize painting fumes.

You may also need a paint that's made to be an exterior paint which will be more durable and weatherproof for painting a shed or the exterior of your home.

One more thing to consider is whether or not you want a self-priming paint which can cut down on painting time.

Though it might cost more per gallon of paint, it truly packs a punch in terms of the features it includes for the price.

How Much Do Different Gallons of Benjamin Moore Paint Cost?

Now that we've gone over the factors that impact paint costs, we can start to get specific.

Keep in mind though, each gallon of paint is going to be ideal for different scenarios.

So while it might be tempting to save your money by buying a cheaper gallon of paint that's not exactly what you need for your project, this will probably cost more money in the long run and yield worse results for your paint job.

Interior Paints

Benjamin Moore Has several different lines of interior paints to choose from that are meant for different purposes.

Benjamin Moore Aura

Aura is one of the most expensive paint lines by Benjamin Moore because it's one of the highest quality paints on the market.

This is a very rich, thick, durable paint that has a mildew-resistant coating and offers better coverage with each coat.

Not only that but it's a self-priming paint that is zero-VOC and can cover 350 to 400 square feet per gallon. It also comes in a bath & spa waterborne interior paint for bathrooms and other high-humidity environments.

Plus, it comes in eggshell, matte, satin, and semi-gloss finishes so it's a versatile option for a whole host of interior paint projects.

Because of all this, it will cost you a pretty penny, coming in at $80/gallon.

But I would argue it's worth it because of the amount of painting power packed into every paint can.

Regal Select Waterborne Interior Paint

One of the other paint lines they have is the Regal Select line that is an acrylic paint and primer with a mildew-resistant coating.

This line is slightly less expensive than the Aura line, but it's still a zero-VOC paint meaning it's low-odor and it's incredibly easy to supply.

It's also one of the most high-quality paints on the market and it's fantastic for a whole bunch of home improvement projects because it works on drywall, masonry, wood, plaster, and also non-ferrous metals.

Plus, this paint is washable with soap and water and it covers 400 to 450 square feet so you get better coverage for your money.

One gallon of this paint will run you about $59/gallon.

ben Waterborne Interior Paint

The next paint line that Benjamin Moore offers is the ben Waterborne Interior Paint which is a premium-quality acrylic latex paint.

This is also a self-priming, zero-VOC low-odor paint with a mildew-resistant coating.

It comes in a flat finish, eggshell, and semi-gloss finish as well which makes it fairly versatile for all sorts of home improvement projects.

Plus, this paint line is much more affordable coming in at $42/gallon.

Muresco Ceiling Paint

The last interior paint line we'll go over is their incredible ceiling paint line.

This line only comes in a flat finish, but it's one of the better paints out there for ceilings.

It's a paint and primer combo that is easy to apply and designed specifically to create a smooth finish on your ceiling while hiding imperfections.

I personally think you could probably use this to paint baseboards as well if you're working on a big home improvement project to save your money.

Not only that, but it's fairly inexpensive for the quality, costing $42/gallon.

Exterior Paints

Benjamin Moore also has a whole host of exterior paint lines that offer much more durability and weatherproofing for exterior painting projects.

Benjamin Moore Regal Select Exterior Paint

Their high-end exterior paint line is Regal Select, which is a mildew-resistant and self-priming exterior paint.

It's a fantastic choice for covering several different materials including wood, masonry, vinyl, and non-ferrous metals.

Not only that, but it has a limited lifetime warranty, so if you're looking for a high-quality paint to paint your home's exterior, it's an excellent option for that as opposed to opting for cheap paint.

It is a more expensive exterior paint, however, coming in at $63/gallon.

ben Waterborne Exterior Paint

Their other exterior paint line is their ben Waterborne Exterior paint which is a slightly less expensive option.

The ben paint comes in 3 different finishes - Flat Finish, Low Lustre, and Soft Gloss - which are all 100% acrylic paints designed for a huge variety of exterior surfaces.

This stuff also offers a low-temperature application down to 35 degrees so if you're looking for a paint you can use in the fall or spring, this is a great option for that.

This also resists cracking and peeling and offers a mildew-resistant coating with a 25-year warranty.

Plus, it's got a lower price point compared to other paint lines from Benjamin Moore, clocking in at $48/gallon.

How To Save Money On Benjamin Moore Paint?

So now that you have a good feel for the paint prices of each type of paint from Benjamin Moore, you might be wondering how you can save your money and still use high-quality paint.

Luckily, there are a few ways you can save some money on Benjamin Moore paints.

Hardware Stores vs. Online Shopping

This one might seem a little obvious, but shopping for your paint in person at an Ace Hardware or Lowe's will probably save you more money in the long run, even if it's just in shipping costs.

However, shopping at your local hardware store offers a few more cost-effective benefits as well.

For instance, hardware stores are far more likely to offer sales and discounted prices from time to time compared to a Benjamin Moore store.

Not only that, but sometimes hardware stores might have dented or damaged cans that they keep in the back and may offer you a discount on.

As long as the paint inside isn't damaged, the quality of the paint can doesn't really matter! So feel free to ask someone in the store if they have anything like this in their stock room.

Another way that shopping in person can save you money is when it comes to color selection and color matching.

Not only can it save you time to go into a hardware store to pick your paint colors and get samples, but it can also save you money as most stores will offer free paint sample strips that you'll have to pay for if you're ordering them on the Benjamin Moore site.

Minimizing Coats of Paint

Another way you can save your money when opting for Benjamin Moore paint is to minimize the amount of paint you end up using.

Now, obviously, you want to make sure you're getting enough coverage on your surface for the paint job to look good. However, there are a few ways to ensure maximum adhesion of your paint.

One of these hacks is to use a really good primer under your paint. While all of the paints mentioned above are "Self Priming" paints, that doesn't mean you can't add a primer underneath them.

In fact, I'd recommend doing so, especially if you're painting on fresh drywall or another porous surface to increase the paint's adhesion to the surface and ultimately waste less paint.

Another way to minimize the amount of paint you're using is to take your time, tape everything off, and be incredibly precise in your application. Make sure you're using the best paintbrush or paint roller possible so it's not absorbing a bunch of your paint.

Make sure you're following painting best practices so you can get the best bang for your buck.

Did you know: Using a primer when you paint can actually save you money! This is because it creates a much better surface for your paint to adhere to, so you'll likely use less of it.

How Much Does It Generally Cost To Paint A Room With Benjamin Moore Paint?

Now let's get into the nitty-gritty: How much would it cost to paint a single room with Benjamin Moore paint?

Bedroom or Living Room

When it comes to painting a "standard" room in your home that doesn't require high-humidity paint, it all comes down to square footage.

The typical bedroom in the U.S. is around 144 square feet, so if you factor in other painting supplies needed plus a single gallon of Benjamin Moore's Regal Select Interior Paint, it'll cost about $150.

However, if you decide to go for the higher-end Benjamin Moore Aura paint line, it'll cost around $170.

If you're painting a living room, which is typically around 616 square feet, it'll cost between $175 to $250 depending on which paint line you choose and this is because you'll need 2 gallons of paint instead of just one.

If you want a more detailed breakdown of how I arrived at these figures, check out our guide below.

How Much Is Benjamin Moore Paint Vs. Sherwin Williams Paint?

So how do Benjamin Moore's paint prices add up to other direct competitors like Sherwin Williams?

Keep in mind, these are the 2 top paint brands out there and their prices reflect that. They're definitely more expensive than brands like Valspar, Behr, and Glidden.

That said, let's do a direct comparison between these two paint brands below!

Comparing High-End Interior Paint Prices

  • Benjamin Moore Aura Interior Paint = $80/gallon
  • Sherwin Williams Emerald Interior Latex Paint = $94/gallon
  • Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior Paint = $60/gallon
  • Sherwin Williams Duration Home Interior Acrylic Latex Paint = $70/gallon

Comparing High-End Exterior Paint Prices

  • Benjamin Moore Regal Select Exterior Paint = $64/gallon
  • Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex = $70/gallon
  • Benjamin Moore ben Waterborne Exterior Paint = $48/gallon
  • Sherwin Williams A-100 Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint = $50/gallon

So, as you can see the prices between Benjamin Moore's paint lines and Sherwin William's paint lines are pretty comparable, but in general Sherwin Williams is more expensive.

There's not a massive difference in quality between the two, so if you're looking to save your money while still investing in high-quality paint, Benjamin Moore is still a great option for your home improvement projects.

Final Thoughts On The Cost of Benjamin Moore Paints

Benjamin Moore is one of the best paint brands and while they're definitely more expensive than brands like Valspar or Glidden, it's for a good reason.

Their paints offer much better coverage, and they have so many more features packed into every paint can because they're all mildew resistant, low-VOC or zero-VOC, and self-priming.

If you love to take on DIY home improvement projects rather than hiring a painting contractor, I recommend spending some of the money that you'll save on high-quality paint from Benjamin Moore.

As always, happy painting!
