What Affects The Cost Of Sherwin Williams Paint?

While Sherwin Williams is known to be one of the most premium paint brands out there (if not the most premium brand), they still do have some affordable paint options that you can choose from if you're set on shopping at Sherwin Williams.

Choosing a high-quality paint is a great option when you're looking to create a stellar paint job.

Sherwin Williams is one of the best paints out there and it's very comparable to Benjamin Moore or Behr.

These 3 brands are renowned as some of the best paint brands out there, but Sherwin Williams is probably the best one (in my opinion) if you want a high-quality finish.

With that said, let's answer the question of "how much a gallon of Sherwin Williams paint costs" depending on the type of paint you're looking for.

While I can't give you a "one size fits all" answer by breaking it down into categories and then estimating the overall cost to paint a room with Sherwin Williams paint.

Factors That Affect Paint Prices

Before we dive into specific prices, let's talk about some of the key factors that affect the overall price of your paint.

Paint Finish

One of the main factors that affect the price of paint is the paint finish.

Paints come in all sorts of finishes that determine the final luster of the paint job.

For example, Sherwin Williams offers the following finishes which they refer to as "sheens":

  • Satin
  • Semi-Gloss
  • Flat
  • Gloss
  • Eggshell
  • High Gloss
  • Matte
  • Low Lustre
  • Medium Lustre
  • Pearl
  • Ultra Matte
  • Velvet

This list is by far the most extensive list of finishes compared to many other paint brands, which means you have more options available at a Sherwin Williams store than most other paint stores.

Which is great! But it can also be a bit confusing and overwhelming.

While many of these sheens are going to be comparable in price, some of them are a bit more expensive with Sherwin Williams paint, so if you're looking to keep costs low, try to be a bit open-minded with the sheen you're choosing.

Other Paint Qualities

Another factor that can impact the overall price of the paint is the additional qualities you're looking for in your paint.

For example, if you need a mildew resistant paint for a high-moisture area that might cost more than a typical gallon of paint.

You can also look specifically for a low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) or zero-VOC paint to minimize painting fumes.

You may also need a paint that's made to be an exterior paint which will be more durable and weatherproof for painting a shed or the exterior of your home.

One more thing to consider is whether or not you want self-priming paint which can cut down on painting time as well as painting costs.

Though it might cost more per gallon of paint, it will likely save you money by helping you avoid buying a separate gallon of primer.

How Much Do Different Gallons of Sherwin Williams Paint Cost?

Now that we've gone over the factors that impact paint costs, we can be a bit more specific.

Keep in mind though, each gallon of paint is going to be ideal for different scenarios. But choosing the right style of paint for a specific scenario is the most budget-friendly way to get a paint job done.

So while it might be tempting to save your money by buying a cheaper gallon of paint that's not exactly what you need for your project, this will probably cost more money in the long run and yield worse results for your paint job.

Interior Paints

Sherwin Williams Has several different lines of interior paints to choose from that are meant for different purposes.

Sherwin Williams Emerald

The Emerald line by Sherwin Williams is definitely the most expensive interior paint line they have.

A typical gallon of Emerald Interior Latex Paint will cost between $75 - $100.

While yes, that is incredibly expensive compared to many paint brands, however, there is a pretty good reason for that.

The Emerald Latex Paint lines are super durable, washable, and create amazing coverage in a variety of situations.

If you're looking to create an incredible finish on your next paint job, Emerald paint is a great way to do it.

It also has properties that are mildew-resistant so it's going to last even longer in basements and areas that are more prone to mold growth.

P.S. If you're wondering how many square feet a given paint from Sherwin Williams will cover, check out their video below which tells you how much paint to buy.

Sherwin Williams Duration

Their mid-tier Duration Interior Latex Paint line is another great choice for a variety of situations and locations within the home.

A typical gallon of paint from their Duration line will run between $70 - $75.

The Duration Home line is a paint and primer combo that is also stain-resistant, plus it will cover any existing stains on your walls as well.

It's a high hide paint that is super durable and washable just like the Emerald line but it's specifically formulated for high traffic areas like kitchens and hallways where fingerprints and grime tend to accumulate on the paint.

This acrylic paint is a fantastic option if you're looking for a combination of affordability and durability.

Sherwin Williams Cashmere

The Cashmere line is a fantastic interior acrylic latex paint that is very smooth and silky.

It's also a paint and primer in one that is incredibly easy to apply with a roller or brush and it's super forgiving.

The Cashmere line is a fantastic option for painters with limited experience who still want to create a gorgeous finish on your walls.

A typical gallon of paint from the Cashmere line will run you about $60 - $70.

This paint is also great at hiding stains (though probably not as much as the Duration paint, so if you have some big stains to hide this isn't the best choice).

But, if you just have some minor stains and want a great paint to use for your next home improvement projects, the Cashmere line is a great place to start.

Sherwin Williams SuperPaint

The SuperPaint line is really super at creating a beautiful, high-hide finish that is an excellent choice for paint color changes.

It's also a highly durable paint and primer combo with amazing scrubbability.

A typical gallon of paint from the SuperPaint line will run anywhere from $60 - $65.

So, if you're looking for a great paint with a flat, satin, velvet, or semi-gloss finish that can cover the old paint color, this line is probably the best one for you!

Sherwin Williams Captivate

The last interior paint we'll go over is the Captivate acrylic latex paint.

This line is by far the least expensive gallon of paint from Sherwin Williams and will run between $35 - $45 per gallon.

This line was specifically designed for DIY fans who want to tackle their home improvement projects with a high quality paint that is still affordable and comparable to other brands.

Not only that, but this paint is a paint and primer in one with an easy to control application that is super durable.

Plus, it comes in over 1,700 colors and 3 different sheens (flat, satin, and semi-gloss) and it's a low-VOC paint as well.

Exterior Paints

Sherwin Williams also has a whole host of exterior paint lines that offer much more durability and weatherproofing for exterior painting projects.

Sherwin Williams Emerald

Their main high-end exterior paint line is the Emerald line which is an incredibly durable acrylic latex paint for weatherproofing your home's exterior.

A typical gallon of the Emerald Exterior Paint is between $105 - $112, which is definitely pricey but if you're going for a high-end, long-lasting finish it's a no-brainer.

It's imbibed with a "Self-Cleaning Technology" that Sherwin Williams has patented, which is probably why it's so pricey, but it allows dirt to wash away while still offering amazing UV protection.

They do have several different types of their Emerald Exterior Paint like their Rain Refresh line for wetter environments, and their Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint that is specifically formulated for painting trim.

So, if you want a high quality paint that you can count on to keep your home or shed painted well for years to come, this is the line for you.

Sherwin Williams FlexTemp

One of the more mid-tier ranges they have is the FlexTemp Exterior acrylic latex paint which is still incredibly durable and it's intended to be flexible for painting in extreme temperatures.

A typical gallon of paint from this line costs between $70 - $75.

So, if you're looking for a paint that you can apply in less than ideal temperatures (anywhere from 35° F to 120° F) and that will maintain its integrity in those temperatures, this is the line for the job!

Sherwin Williams SuperPaint

Their exterior SuperPaint line is one of the best acrylic latex paints for frosty environments as well as hot, humid ones.

Not only is it a super smooth paint to apply, but it resists fading and peeling and it's also dirt-resistant and mildew-resistant.

A typical gallon of paint from this line will run between $60 - $65.

It's a great line if you're looking for durability in those harsh environments but you want to go for a slightly more affordable option than the FlexTemp or Emerald lines.

Sherwin Williams A-100 Exterior Latex Paint

The final exterior line I wanted to mention is the A-100 line because it's the most affordable exterior acrylic latex line they offer.

The best part - in my opinion - of this line is that it's way less expensive than the other lines, but it still offers a 15-Year Warranty to ensure that you have the best durability for your home's exterior.

A typical gallon of the A-100 paint will run between $40 - $50.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, exterior paints cost more in general than interior paints. But it's essential to use the proper exterior paint for your given home improvement project, this is not an area to skimp on the budget.

(However, I will go over some ways to save money on Sherwin Williams paint below.)

How To Save Money On Sherwin Williams Paint?

So now that you have a good feel for the paint prices of each type of paint from Sherwin Williams, you might be wondering how you can save your money and still use high-quality paint.

Luckily, there are a few ways you can save some money on Sherwin Williams paints.

Hardware Stores vs. Online Shopping

This one might seem a little obvious, but shopping for your paint in person at a Sherwin WIlliams store will probably cost a bit more.

The reason for this is that when shopping online from Sherwin Williams directly, you may be able to use services like Honey to find discount codes or other promotions.

However, when Sherwin Williams does run promotions, those will apply in-store as well.

Obviously, if you know in advance that you're going to need paint from Sherwin Williams for various DIY or home improvement projects throughout the year, it's wise to wait until events like Black Friday and other major sales periods to see if they run a deal.

However, shopping at your local hardware store offers a few more cost-effective benefits as well.

While not all hardware stores carry Sherwin Williams paints, some do.

So take a look at local stores like Ace Hardware to see if you can find a deal there.

Not only that, but sometimes hardware stores might have dented or damaged cans that they keep in the back and may offer you a discount on.

As long as the paint inside isn't damaged, the quality of the paint can doesn't really matter! So feel free to ask someone in the store if they have anything like this in their stock room.

Just keep in mind that big box hardware stores like Home Depot don't always carry Sherwin Williams paints because they have their own competitor brand (Behr) that they'd rather promote.

However, Lowe's usually carries some Sherwin Williams paints as well as Krylon (a subsidiary brand of Sherwin Williams) so you might find some good options there.

Did you know: Using a primer when you paint can actually save you money! This is because it creates a much better surface for your paint to adhere to, so you'll likely use less of it.

Minimizing Coats of Paint

Another way you can save your money when opting for Sherwin Williams paint is to minimize the amount of paint you end up using.

Now, obviously, you want to make sure you're getting enough coverage on your surface for the paint job to look good. However, there are a few ways to ensure maximum adhesion of your paint.

One of these hacks is to use a really good primer under your paint. While almost all of the paint lines mentioned above are "Self Priming" paints, that doesn't mean you can't add a primer underneath them.

In fact, I'd recommend doing so, especially if you're painting on fresh drywall or another porous surface to increase the paint's adhesion to the surface and ultimately waste less paint.

Another way to minimize the amount of paint you're using is to take your time, tape everything off, and be incredibly precise in your application. Make sure you're using the best paintbrush or paint roller possible so it's not absorbing a bunch of your paint.

Make sure you're following painting best practices so you can get the best bang for your buck.

How Much Does It Generally Cost To Paint A Room With Sherwin Williams Paint?

Now let's get into the nitty-gritty: How much would it cost to paint a single room with Sherwin Williams paint?

Bedroom or Living Room

When it comes to painting a "standard" room in your home that doesn't require high-humidity paint, it all comes down to square footage.

The typical bedroom in the U.S. is around 144 square feet, so if you factor in other painting supplies needed plus a single gallon of Sherwin Williams Interior Paint, it'll cost between $115 and $180 depending on which line of paint you go with.

However, if you're painting a living room, which is typically around 616 square feet and will require 2 gallons of paint, it'll cost between $150 to $280 depending on which paint line you use.

If you want a more detailed breakdown of how I arrived at these figures, check out our guide below.

How Much Is Sherwin Williams Paint Vs. Benjamin Moore Paint?

So how do Sherwin Williams' paint prices add up to other direct competitors like Benjamin Moore?

Keep in mind, these are the 2 top paint brands out there and their prices reflect that. They're definitely more expensive (on average) than brands like Valspar, Behr, and Glidden.

That said, let's do a direct comparison between these two paint brands below!

Comparing High-End Interior Paint Prices

  • Sherwin WilliamsEmerald Interior Latex Paint = $94/gallon
  • Benjamin MooreAuraInterior Paint = $80/gallon
  • Sherwin Williams Duration Home Interior Acrylic Latex Paint = $70/gallon
  • Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior Paint = $60/gallon

Comparing High-End Exterior Paint Prices

  • Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latex = $70/gallon
  • Benjamin Moore Regal Select Exterior Paint = $64/gallon
  • Sherwin Williams A-100 Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint = $50/gallon
  • Benjamin Moore ben Waterborne Exterior Paint = $48/gallon

So, as you can see the prices between Benjamin Moore's paint lines and Sherwin William's paint lines are pretty comparable, but in general Sherwin Williams is more expensive.

And while Benjamin Moore is a great company with some great paint, most expert painters believe Sherwin Williams to be one of the most high-quality paint brands out there.

So if you're truly looking to create a stunning finish and invest in your next home improvement project, Sherwin Williams is probably the best choice for you.

Final Thoughts On The Cost of Sherwin Williams Paints

Sherwin Williams is one of the best paint brands out there, and while they're definitely more expensive than brands like Valspar or Glidden, it's for a good reason.

Their paints offer much better coverage, and they have so many more features packed into every paint can because they're all mildew resistant, low-VOC or zero-VOC, and self-priming.

If you love to take on DIY home improvement projects rather than hiring a painting contractor, I recommend spending some of the money that you'll save on high-quality paint from Sherwin Williams.

As always, happy painting!
