How Much Does It Cost To Paint A Jeep Wrangler?

Painting a Jeep Wrangler will require you to cover ~100 square feet of surface area, and the price will vary depending on whether you are going to paint yourself or hire out the work to a pro.

We estimate that it will cost you anywhere from $200 (DIY cost)-$3000(high-end body shop) for painting your Jeep.

Jeeps are used for everything from extreme off-roading to flashy commuting, so for this reason there are tons of different options when it comes to putting paint on the panels.

Average Cost To Paint A Jeep Wrangler If You Do It Yourself?

You could paint your Wrangler for as low as $100 or as high as $1000+ dollars depending on the quality of paint you use.

Don't forget you'll need materials for sanding, filling in imperfections, and covering up surfaces that you don't want to get paint on.

Scroll down to get a better idea on how to get the best price, and which paints to use when doing it yourself.

Average Cost To Paint A Jeep Wrangler If You Hire a Professional Company?

We'll say the average cost is about $1000 for hiring out the work, but it really just depends on where you are at.

For example, painters on the east coast probably have higher hourly rates for painting(something like $100 per service hour) while companies in the midwest might charge significantly less(something like $60 per service hour).

The best way to find an average cost in your area would be to do some research on local paint shops in your area for a color change service on a Jeep and then average them out.

How To Estimate The Cost To Paint A Jeep Wrangler?

For DIY: Choose Your Paint

The paint you choose might vary in price, and you'll want to have enough for 2-3 coats of each stage, so read the labels on the paint cans to figure out recommend coverage.

Measure Square Footage

Measuring the exact square footage of the area you are painting will help you get an idea of how much paint you need to purchase.

For example, does the Jeep have a hardtop for the Rubicon version? If so, the square footage will be different than a soft top. That's why you've got to pull out a measuring tape and measure for each specific vehicle for the most accurate estimate.

For Hiring Out The Work: Choose Your Shop

Google will help you find all the reasonably priced paint shops in your area, and after you have a few in mind, you can give them each a call to get a ballpark price for the job.

In our opinion, anywhere from $500(low quality)-$3000(super quality) is a reasonable price -anything higher and you could be getting ripped off - anything lower will leave you unsatisfied with the quality.

~$1.80-$20 Cost To Paint Per Square Foot?

Does it surprise you that this American made vehicle has a surface area of about 100 square feet when it comes to painting?

Jeep has designed with even numbers to make things easy for everyone.

So, if one quart covers 100 square feet, and you need 2 coats for every stage, you'll need 6 quarts of paint for the job.

You might even just want to buy a gallon of primer, a gallon of basecoat, and a gallon of clear coat to be sure you have enough for the job.

DIY Per Square Foot

You'll need: 2 quarts of primer + 2 quarts of base coat + 2 coats of clear coat

Below we say that a reasonable price for the paint is around $180 dollars.

6 quarts of paint(~$180) / 100 square feet = $1.80 per square foot

Note: The square footage will vary depending on your Wrangler model. Measure your specific Wrangler and find your specific paint choice to get the best-estimated price.

Did you know: A typical car paint job costs anywhere from $1000 to $3500. But, in some cases the value of the car will increase more than that with a new paint job which is a great reason to DIY!

Pro Cost Per Square Foot

Say you hire a body shop to apply some good paint to your Jeep, and you pay $2000(a reasonable higher-end price) for the job.

$2000 total cost / 100 square feet = $20 per square foot

Estimated Cost of Paint For A Jeep Wrangler?

The cost of paint is going to differ depending on the paint you use. Don't forget that you'll need other supplies like masking tape/film, sandpaper, and possibly even body filler!

We're just as excited as you at the fact you're about to paint your Jeep Wrangler.

That's why we've done some research to give you these different viable options for buying automotive paint:

  • Single-stage polyurethane kit

Paint kits like these are a great option because they come with basically everything you need to get the job done.

  • Truck bed coating

Truck bed coating like this Rust-Oleum stuff is an awesome idea for putting on the body panels of your Jeep.

  • Lacquer

Lacquers are a classic option that will give your Jeep a durable paint finish. Just don't forget to apply a primer before and clearcoat after for the best results.

  • Plasti dip

Plasti dip is another option for quickly changing the color of you Wrangler. One of the great qualities of plasti dip is that it can be easily removed with a solvent like alcohol or acetone.

  • Acrylic Urethane

This two-part acrylic urethane paint is another great option for a cheap paint job that will last longer than plasti dip or spray cans.

  • Carbon fiber vinyl wrap

Want to change to a different color, but not trying to bust out the paint gun?

You could try a vinyl wrap that comes in a big sheet.

This is a quick solution that works every bit as paint, and the best part is that you can peel it off later if you want to change the paint color yet again.

Check Out The Links Above For Pricing

If you click on some of the links above, you'll be able to get a basic DIY cost based on Amazon prices. There are plenty of decent paints like matte black options that will do the job just fine.

We figure the paint job will require you to purchase about 6 quarts of paint(1 1/2 gallons), but you should buy more like 3 gallons just to be safe because it really sucks when you run out of paint in the middle of a paint job.

So, if you were to purchase 6 quarts of paint at about $30/quart, you would be spending about $180 on paint costs.

And remember, if you do decide to purchase by the gallon instead of a quart, you'll be guaranteed to have enough paint for the job (most likely for a cheaper price), and then you can sell the leftover paint to another Jeep or Mustang owner who is looking to get repainted as well.

Plenty of options to choose from!

As you can see there are a mountain of options when it comes to painting your new Jeep.

How To Save Money When Painting A Jeep Wrangler?

Jeep Wrangler/Jeep Cherokee has to be one of the easiest DIY(do it yourself) paint jobs when it comes to doing it yourself, and we highly recommend truck bed liner if you are an off-roader because it gives the exterior of your Jeep a rugged and easy-to-clean surface.

All you have to do is spray off the mud when you get home.

Sell Your Leftover Paint

If you buy a gallon of each painting stage(primer + base coat + clear coat), you could potentially get the job done with just half of each gallon.

You've now purchased paint at a better price and have enough to paint another Jeep.

There's an opportunity to give your friend or an online consumer your extra paint without losing money on the project while still ensuring you had enough for the job.

Find The Best Paint Shop Price

Remember to shop around when getting a price for your paint job. If there are multiple body shops in your area, call and get estimates from each one for the best pricing.

There are shops like Maaco that offer a one-stage polyurethane paint job for dirt cheap, but we recommend you hire your locally owned body shops before all else despite the price.

Note: Don't forget to read online reviews to make sure the company you are hiring isn't going to end up giving you a horror story to tell.
