Did you know: The first electric golf cart was invented in 1932 but it wasn't until the 1950s that they entered the mainstream. And even then, they were mostly used for players who couldn't walk far.

How To Estimate The Cost To Paint A Golf Cart?

Estimating the cost of painting a golf cart(or golf carts) will require you to measure the square footage of the panels that need to be painted, and  decide on the paint you are going to use.

For example, the price will differ if you are going to use spray paint can(like plastic fusion spray paint) when compared to using a higher quality acrylic latex with an HVLP paint sprayer.

Pull out that measuring tape, and look on local sites like Amazon to get a good idea on a decent acrylic latex paint you can use for the job.

2$-$13+ Cost To Paint Per Square Foot?

DIY cost per square foot:

~$60 on paint & prep materials / ~30 total square feet = ~$2 per square foot

The square footage required to paint a golf cart can't be that much. By painting the top on both sides + the front and back panels that will equal ~30 square feet of surface to cover

We'll go ahead and paint the bottom side of the roof also. Either way, about a quart of acrylic latex paint will do the job.

Pro cost per square foot

Now, let's say pro painters come to paint your Yamaha or other brand golf cart, and they charge you $400 for a quality job.

~$400 total cost / ~$30 square feet = ~$13.33 per square foot

Note: Professional cost will vary by company. Be sure to get multiple bids to get the best price on your project.

Estimated Cost of Paint For A Golf Cart?

What kind of paints should you use?

We recommend you buy 1 quart of primer + 1 quart of base coat + 1 quart of clear coat for an expert quality paint job on your custom golf cart.

Here are some ballpark prices we dug up to give you some perspective on how much each paint costs, and in general, there are plenty of different paints that will do the job

Primer

We found this acrylic primer that costs ~$15 and will cover your whole golf cart--it might even cover 2 karts if you are painting the whole fleet.

Base Coat

An acrylic latex will work great to paint vinyl or fiberglass golf cart panels.

We paid $25 for a medium quality acrylic latex in the color tan.

Clear Coat

We chose a cheaper clear coat like this one that costs ~$20.

Our total paint purchase will cost ~$60 for reasonable quality and a sufficient amount of paint.

Estimated Cost of Labor For A Golf Cart?

DIY Cost

Painting a golf cart yourself shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

Besides, it's an easy job, especially when you are in the relaxed setting of a golf course.

Pro Cost

Say you want to hire a company to come paint your whole fleet of golf carts, and they charge you $400.

That means the painters are charging you somewhere around $300 in labor (and $100 on paint).

How To Save Money When Painting A Golf Cart?

Buy/Sell Paint Extras

Since painting a golf cart doesn't require that much paint, you could always buy and sell the extras on your local classifieds/marketplace.

Try tricking out your golf cart with tint and other accessories from companies like EZGO on Amazon.

Hire A Handyman

If you don't want to do the job yourself, and you also don't want to pay an arm and a leg, you may want to check out your local handyman options.

Use Decals

You don't have to paint your electric golf cart; you could always apply a vinyl wrap/decal that quickly covers the body panels without the hassle of sanding and repainting.

Painting Yourself

Remember, painting yourself will save you money, but it won't save you time.

You'll want to take that into consideration when deciding whether or not to hire someone for the job.

Remember to paint in thin coats to get the most life out of your DIY paint job. Thick paint will chip off easier in the future.

Why Hire A Pro?

  • You will save time by hiring someone to paint your entire cart fleet.
  • Professionals are licensed and insured for the job
  • Avoid costly mistakes when painting in large quantities (pros know what they are doing)
